The Muslim Mosques and Charitable Trusts or ‘’Wakf Act’ No 51 of 1956 was passed and by Ceylon Government Gazette No 11, 112 of April, 1956.

In 1958, just two years after the enactment of the act, the need was felt for amending it for the reason that several problems of enforcement has arisen. The then Commissioner set about drafting amendments resulting in the Muslim Mosque and Charitable Trust of Wakfs (Amendment) Act and the first amendment passed out in year 1962.

The Muslim Mosques and Charitable Trusts or ‘’Wakf Act’ No 33 of 1982 made further changes particularly the introduction of an appellate Wakf Tribunal which will hear and determine appeals from the orders of the Wakf Board.

This is an act to provide legal guidance for registration of mosques, Muslim shrines and places of religious resort, whether incorporated or not, to prescribe the powers, duties and functions of the trustees of registered mosques, Muslim shrines, places of religious resort and Muslim charitable trusts or “Wakfs”, to establish a Muslim charities fund and “Wakfs” ordinance and to provide for matters connected above.
